5 Layered Living Rooms for Fall
Layering is one of the most effective tools in the design of an interior for creating warm, lived-in spaces with depth and dimension. Successful layering comes from balancing multiple elements, including color, texture, materiality, placement, and accessories, to craft interiors that feel inviting and sophisticated. Whether it’s the interplay of deep and light tones, the contrast of soft fabrics against stone or wood, or the careful arrangement of furniture and objects, this technique creates an environment that evolves and endures over time and season. Below, we highlight 5 projects that showcase the art of layering.

Uptown Eclectic
The Uptown Eclectic living room is richly textured, featuring boucle accent chairs, a mohair sofa, a carved wood coffee table, ceramic side tables, and a stone mantel accented with brass, all of which contribute to a tactile richness. Layered rugs add a creative and cozy foundation, while dried florals on the hearth bring a seasonal, organic touch.

Park Avenue
The Park Avenue living room is a study in both material and compositional layering. Leather, chenille, boucle, metal, and wood are woven together seamlessly, while the thoughtful placement of furniture and accessories reinforces a sense of depth. Nesting coffee tables and a custom side table that extends over the sectional introduce structural layering, while tactile throw pillows, blankets, and soft window treatments introduce softness. Every element from the materials to the arrangement contributes to an atmosphere of elegance and sophistication.

Willoughby Way
Architectural elements anchor the design at Willoughby Way. Exposed wooden beams and a monumental stone mantelpiece lend a rustic elegance, while plush white furniture and carpeting soften the room, balancing the roughness of the natural materials. The expansive A-frame windows open onto sweeping mountain views, adding another layer of dimension. A generously scaled sectional, dotted with throw pillows, invites relaxation and conversation, creating a space that is grounded and comfortable.

Fifth Avenue Pied-Á-Terre
Layering in the Fifth Avenue Pied-á-Terre living room begins at the floor with plush carpeting and builds upward with a palette of deep blue, gray, and beige. The back wall is anchored by a protruding black marble fireplace, creating an alcove on either side of the mantel where a pair of matching side tables rest. Touches of brass in the lamps and coffee table bring a metallic pop, while fresh florals and throw pillows add a hint of color, completing the balanced interplay of materials and tones.

East Hampton Golf Club
Luxe materials and gentle tones create a layered and cozy interior in the East Hamptons Golf Club members’ lounge. Wood accents from the exposed beams to the custom millwork bookcases that line the walls introduce a traditional feel. The sofas pair brown leather upholstery with soft white linen cushion covers, marrying tradition with modern sensibilities. An arrangement of decorative pillows, including ones with leather intrecciato, tops the sofa. The bookcases along the wall, coffee table books, and artwork infuse this space with warmth, comfort, and a sense of longevity.
