Case Study of Turtle Bay Pied-á-Terre
The Turtle Bay Pied-á-Terre is a contemporary residence that reflects a refined sense of materiality. The layout of this Manhattan apartment was reimagined to better support modern living by relocating the kitchen, living, and bar areas to create a more open and connected environment.
Foyer
The Turtle Bay Pied-á-Terre foyer showcases a custom iron-forged chandelier from Cox London upon entering the residence. Sculpted with twisting vines, heart-shaped leaves, and clusters of grapes, the piece is intricate and evocative. A nod to the client’s passion for viticulture, it brings a warm, personal touch to the space.
Kitchen & Bar
The kitchen was relocated and rebuilt as an open-concept space within the main living area. The clients, who live abroad, envisioned the home to be a place for hosting and entertaining when they visit the city. The new layout encourages conversation and ease of movement, transforming the kitchen into the social heart of the home.
The kitchen design blends seamlessly into the dining area with a palette of creamy neutrals. The details and refined finishes of the high-gloss rippled cabinets, the white oak millwork, and the bar-height stone kitchen island make the kitchen feel rich, textured, and warm.
Where the kitchen previously stood, we introduced a home bar—a moody, elegant nook that enhances the apartment’s entertaining appeal without interrupting the visual openness of the main living area. The bar features full-height Breccia Capraia marble backsplash and glossy oxblood cabinets.
Living Room
The living room’s irregular footprint presented a design challenge. To soften the room’s asymmetry, we curated a series of organic forms: a curved sofa that hugs the space’s edges, sculptural resin coffee tables with an amorphous quality, and plush, rounded upholstery that draw the eye inward. Together, these elements create a layered, inviting atmosphere that balances movement with comfort.
Primary Bathroom
The stone-swathed primary bathroom strikes a balance between luxury and restraint. We replaced the dated tile with slabs of Calacatta Borghini marble, adding a modern yet timeless elegance to the room. The vanity is crafted from bleached white oak with narrow fluting on the base cabinets for more texture and character. Crystal hand pulls lend a refined touch, catching the light from the integrated cove and recessed lighting.
